I am not a photographer - but now my photos look significantly better since I used my "race money" to buy a camera. It's the Nikon D5000 and I like it a lot so far. These are the first few pictures Chris and I took with it.

Be sure to get a nice set of lenses, that's the important part. The body will depreciate over time but lenses keep their value and can be used for decades if handled responsibly.
The Nikon D5000 is an impressive camera. Your going to have a ton of fun with it. When you get bored or use to it, you can always look into new nikon lens for different effects.
